Sunset camel ride in Marrakech: timing through the year, the light, photos and what happens after

A sunset camel ride from Marrakech is one of those experiences that really does look like the photos: a slow line of camels crossing bare desert hills while the sky turns orange and the Atlas mountains darken on the horizon. The best place to do it within easy reach of the city is the Agafay Desert, about 40 to 60 minutes away by road.
We run camel rides in Agafay every day, timed so that they fall in the late afternoon light, close to sunset. This guide explains how the timing works through the year, what the light actually looks like, how to get good photos from the back of a camel, what to wear, and what happens once the sun has gone down.
Why Agafay is the place for a sunset camel ride near Marrakech
There are camel rides closer to the city, notably in the Palmeraie, the palm grove on the northern edge of Marrakech. They're pleasant, but the view there is mostly palm trunks, houses and roads, and the sun disappears behind trees rather than over an open horizon.
Agafay is different. It's a stone desert of pale, rolling hills and plateaus with almost no vegetation, so there's nothing between you and the sky. To the south, the High Atlas forms a long wall on the horizon, snow-capped in winter. When the sun drops, the hills change colour quickly, from beige to gold to pink, and the shadows stretch across the valleys. That open space is what makes a sunset camel ride in Agafay feel special.
How our sunset timing works
All our packages start with pickup in Marrakech at 3:00 PM, every day. After the 40 to 60 minute drive, the activities take place in the late afternoon, and the camel ride and dinner are timed to land around sunset. Here's how the main options fit together:
| Package | Camel ride | Also included | Total time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camel Ride + Dinner & Show | 15 minutes | Dinner with a live show | About 4 hours |
| Quad + Camel + Dinner & Show | 15 minutes or 1 hour | 40 min or 1h30 quad ride, dinner with a show | About 5 or 6 hours |
| Buggy + Camel + Dinner & Fire Show | 15 minutes | 1-hour buggy ride, dinner with a fire show | About 5 hours |
If the sunset itself is the main reason you're coming, the Camel Ride + Dinner & Show is the simplest choice: no engines, no dust, just the camels, the light and dinner. If you'd like a longer time on the camel, the 1-hour camel ride comes with the 1h30 quad option, or you can choose it in the build-your-own experience.
When does the sun set in Agafay through the year?
Sunset moves a lot between seasons. In midwinter it comes much earlier than in midsummer, with spring and autumn in between, and the evening light changes with it:
- Winter (December to February): the earliest sunsets of the year. The air is often very clear, the snow on the Atlas catches the last light, and it gets cold quickly once the sun is gone.
- Spring (March to May): sunset gets later every week. Comfortable temperatures and often a soft, hazy glow.
- Summer (June to August): the latest sunsets. Afternoons are hot, often above 35 °C, so the cooler evening is very welcome.
- Autumn (September to November): sunset gets earlier again. Warm afternoons, mild evenings and some of the most pleasant conditions of the year.
Morocco also moves its clocks during Ramadan, which shifts the clock time of sunset for those weeks. If you want the exact time for your date, check any sunset app for Marrakech. You don't need to plan around it, though: our programme is built so that the camel ride falls in the late, golden part of the afternoon whatever the season.

What the light looks like on the ride
The light changes in stages, and on a camel you have time to notice each of them:
- Late afternoon. The sun is still above the hills and everything has a warm, golden tone. Shadows of the camels stretch long across the ground.
- Golden hour. The hills turn ochre and pink, and the Atlas turns blue-grey. This is usually the best moment for photos of people.
- Sunset. The sun drops behind the western hills and the sky behind it turns orange. Camels and riders become silhouettes.
- Afterglow. For a little while after the sun has gone, the sky keeps changing colour, often through pink and violet. Many people find this the most beautiful part.

Photo tips for a sunset camel ride
Take your photos while the camels are kneeling and once they're walking steadily, not while they stand up or sit down. Those two moments need both hands.
- Strap your phone. A wrist strap or a zipped pocket means you won't drop it from the height of a camel.
- Shoot along the caravan. The line of camels ahead or behind you, with the hills and sky, makes a much stronger picture than a close-up of the camel's neck.
- Face the sun for silhouettes, and turn away from it for warm, golden portraits.
- Don't overdo the zoom. Wide shots that show the empty landscape say more about Agafay.
- Take turns. If you're riding as a couple or a group, agree who films and who simply watches. Sunset passes quickly, and it's worth seeing some of it without a screen.
What to wear for a sunset camel ride
You sit astride the camel, so comfortable long trousers are best. Closed shoes are easier than sandals when you climb on and off. Bring sunglasses for the low sun and a scarf, which is useful against wind and dust (scarves aren't provided). Most importantly, bring a warm layer: the temperature drops quickly after sunset, and from November to March evenings in the desert are genuinely cold, sometimes close to 5 °C in December and January.
What happens after the sun goes down
Your evening doesn't end with the camel ride. After sunset comes dinner, followed by a live show, or a fire show on the buggy package. Eating outside in the desert as the stars appear is, for many guests, as memorable as the ride itself. Vegetarian meals are possible, and if anyone in your group has allergies, let us know in advance. You can read more about the evening on our Agafay desert dinner page. After dinner, you're driven back to Marrakech.
